Book Review: Fangirl
I can't express how emotional I felt when I read Fangirl. Reading Cath's thoughts and emotions was like reading my own in words. The way she is relates to me so much, to a personal level. I can't really put to words how great a writer Rainbow Rowell is. Cath is so realistic, and that I know because Cath is like me. Usually, I wouldn't go for books that do not have much supernatural content, but Fangirl really caught my attention and my heart. I would give 5 out of 5 stars for this awesome book.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Fangirl starts off with Cath entering a new environment. She doesn't like interacting with people much. In new stitations, all the trickiest rules are the ones nobody bothers to explain to you. (And the ones you can't google.) Like, where does the line start? What food can you take? Where are you supposed to stand, then where are you supposed to sit? Where do you go when you're done, why is everyone watching you? -Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell These are the questions I ask myself so often. Reading it is literally putting my thoughts to words. I felt her fear and worried for her as I read the book. Her more outgoing twin sister, Wren, decides that they needed to meet more people and experience new things. She sorta dumps her scared twin. I mean, I understand that Wren has her wants, but to completely dump her sister... It made me angry at her insensitivity. But that just made the whole book more realistic and likable. After all, in the real world, you can't keep leaning on someone else for support. You've got to stand up for yourself! Cath grows up through the book. Given, she does cry easily (still), but she handles things with more courage. This character development made me smile so much. I particularly liked how she handled the situation with Nick. Nick was a complete asshole. He used her for fiction writing and dumped her when he got the piece he wanted. True, it was his story, but Cath helped him write it. He can't just claim all credit like that. Professor Piper said that both their names needed to be in for the story they wrote to be accepted. Ha, you asshole. "I'm sorry," Cath said. "But I don't want any credit. You were right all along. It's your story." The moment she said that, I broke out into cheers. Strike one for Cath and down Nick goes. Thumbs up, girl! Her other characters hold a special place in my heart too. They each have a distinct personality and behaviour. Let's start with Levi. He's an all smiley person, outgoing and easy to talk to. Swoon <3 But most importantly, he doesn't treat Cath like an expandable piece of trash that he can throw aside after usage. He goes all out to help Cath and comforts her. He respects her weirdness and loves her for that. Levi is so sweet!!! I'm really glad Cath found a guy like him. :) There's Reagan, Cath's roommate. At first, I was kinda uhhhh... when Reagan was introduced. But she proved to be a super cool girl. When she found out Cath kissed Levi (Reagan's ex bf), she got over it real quick. It's gotta be kinda awkward but Reagan took the situation really well. I really really like her heehee :D Okay, so tomorrow it's the first day of classes 2014. I'm feeling exactly like Cath felt on her first day. That's probably why I'm doing a review of a book I read 2 months ago. Well, Fangirl is a MUST READ. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT, GO! PUT DOWN EVERYTHING YOU HAVE. YOU WON'T REGRET READING IT. -Sheryl :) (wish me luck tomorrow!) |
