Book Review: Between the LinesThe holidays are coming and exams are over so I have more time to read. More homework too. Anyway, I've just finished reading Between the Lines! I really like the idea of how book characters are like actors on a stage whenever a book opens. When the book closes, they continue leading their own lives. It made me think: as I'm reading Between the Lines, could Oliver and Delilah be watching me while acting out their roles? I give this book a 3.75 rating. Summary: (taken from Goodreads) Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah. And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom. Delilah and Oliver work together to attempt to get Oliver out of his book, a challenging task that forces them to examine their perceptions of fate, the world, and their places in it. And as their attraction to each other grows along the way, a romance blossoms that is anything but a fairy tale. Okay. I like how Delilah is portrayed as a teen. I suppose it's realistic because Jodi Picoult wrote this book together with her teenage daughter. :) Children (including teenagers) want to have a happy ending, whether they admit it or not. It may not be in the form of living happily ever after with their soulmate but rather monetary success for some of us or simply doing something that we enjoy for the rest of our lives. Delilah brings this trait out perfectly. She's a regular teenager facing social problems, who dreams of her happy ending. I'm 15 and I want a happy ending too. Haha :) Oh, the illustriations in the book are really awesome too. Oliver looks so cool. One thing, I'm not sure if it's to make the book funny but defeating the dragon by telling it that it has oral problems is a little... anti climax. To me, I expected some clever trick from Oliver but when he told the dragon about not being ashamed about his oral problems... yeah. It was kinda like a let down.. I don't know, maybe I'm more of an action person. Also, the decision made by Edgar to swap places with Oliver and live in the story book was a bit abrupt. I wish we could get a chapter from Edgar's POV so we can see what he's really thinking inside. I really want to know why Edgar would want leave his mother like that. Other than that, there are certain parts of the book that are a bit abrupt and awkward when read. Made me lift my eyebrows... I'd did like the ending though. Oliver and Delilah could finally be together! Oliver isn't exactly human though, with all that ink black blood. I wonder if Edgar still retains his original crimson red blood when he's inside the book. The book reminded me of Inkheart, because characters from books come alive too. No silver tongue in Between the Lines though. haha :) This picture is from Inkheart. The words on the unicorn are cool. A little different from when Delilah pulled the spider out of the book. The spider's shape was made up of the letters SPIDER. This unicorn is just marked by the words from the book. Still, the concept is kind of similar. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It's quite different from the books that Jodi Picoult usually writes. Still, I encourage those who love happy endings to give it a go! :D -Sheryl Some nice quotes: I’d much rather pretend I’m somewhere else, and any time I open the pages of a book, that happens. -Jodi Picoult, Between the Lines Just because it's fiction doesn't mean it's any less true. -Jodi Picoult, Between the Lines The act of reading is a partnership. The author builds a house, but the reader makes it a home. -Jodi Picoult, Between the Lines How do you know that you are not part of a book? That someone's not reading your story right now? -Jodi Picoult. Between the Lines Labels: Between the Lines, Delilah, Jodi Picoult, Oliver, Samantha Van Leer |
