Book Review: The Indigo Spell

I've just finished reading this awesome book by Richelle Mead. It's the third book of the Bloodlines series, The Indigo Spell! :D I love they way the plot was given an unexpected twist. It makes the book a whole lot more interesting and not cliche. A 4 out of 5 stars rating from me.

Ehh this is from the book jacket:
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

It turns out that it is Alicia and not Veronica who has been the one targeting witches. I like how Richelle writes it in a way that leads us to believe the culprit was Veronica and nearing the end, we get something unexpected. If you look back in the book, there were subtle hints that the culprit was someone else.

I think Sydney's experiences and lessons in the book are things that we can learn from (not the magical wielding part, though). Sydney has always prided herself in being a controlled and intelligent girl. When things don't go according to what she expected, like her falling in love with Adrian, she freaks out because love isn't something she can control. Sorry, I'm making her sound like a control freak. My point is, when things have been going to plan all your life, it's hard to accept it when something doesn't. It scares her. In the end, she adapts to it and learns to accept things for the way it is because some things are just not meant to be controlled.

Well, Adrian... I really like him for always being there for Sydney and not giving up on her though she keeps rejecting him. When Sydney rejected him and said she was leaving for Mexico with Marcus, my heart was like -crack crack crack-, literally shattering. Thanks to Jill (I'm beginning to like her more and more) and a little of Marcus' plan to continue waiting but no action, Sydney made the RIGHT CHOICE of staying in Palm Springs. SYDRIAN FEELS. It's really awesome to see (um, actually.. it's more of reading than seeing) Adrian so happy at the end of the book. He finally gets the love he deserves. <3

Another character that's beginning to grow on me: Mrs Terwilliger. The lady's a little demanding at times but she wants the best for Sydney, to keep Sydney safe. She even went to the extent of wearing herself out to protect Sydney. I thought that was really sweet. Awww :') Thankfully, she didn't die in the hands of Alicia. I might just strangle Alicia myself if she did die (not that I'd be able to beat her magical blasts of energy)...

The only thing disappointing about the book is that the fight between Alicia and Sydney was tooooo short. Throughout the book, so many words were spent on preparing Sydney and hunting of Alicia who was thought to be "Veronica". Then near the ending, there was only a little part of the encounter of Adrian and Sydney with Alicia in Mrs Terwilliger's house. A bit of a letdown, if you ask me. I was hoping for more.

Anyway, you should definitely read this book. Starting from the first book would be more ideal, to get what's going on first. :) SYDRIAN!!!
