Book Review: Matched by Ally Condie

I just finished reading it this morning :D Due to tests, projects and CNY, I haven't had a chance to complete, much less type a book review. Sorry!

Anyway, I give Matched a 4 stars rating. It is written in the POV of Cassia Reyes. I like how Ally Condie managed to circle the book around a poem, constantly making references back to the quotes from the poem. Is this book recommended? Yes, absolutely! :)

Spoilers!!

The book starts off with Cassia setting off for her Match Banquet, in which she will find her life long other half. She is Matched with her best friend Xander Carrow. They are then given a microcard with information about their Match. Of course something goes wrong with Cassia's microcard. Two boys face appears on her microcard, Xander and Ky Markham...
An Official tells Cassia that it was a mistake. Ky could never be Matched to someone as he's an Aberration. It's something like a caste system. Well, Cassia eventually falls in love with Ky but it is not allowed. Goodness, it's like a tragedy. Characters in the book don't even have a chance to choose who they would marry and spend the rest of their lives with. Ky is sent away to fight in some war with rebels, in which he is likely to DIE. The book ends with Cassia's family being relocated and Cassia determined to find Ky.

The book sorta reminds me of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The people are being controlled, and constantly watched. Meals are fixed, love is a matchmake, dressing is strict (plain and simple clothes are to be worn by everybody), time but no freedom, even their personal belongings can be taken away from them without a proper explanation given. I wonder how do the people even survive there in such an oppressed society. I'm glad the Society showed signs of breaking by the end of the book.

I really admire Cassia. She's has such a strong character. Despite growing up and being taught to obey the Officials, she stands firm for the things she want. She's not easily swayed by traditions and has a mind of her own. And she's really lucky that two guys, equally smart and good looking, like or even love her. LOL.

Xander is a really wonderful best friend to have. I love how Xander and Cassia are able to understand each other without saying anything aloud, their chemistry is perfect! Xander, as Cassia says in the book, would bend the laws to protect someone he cares about. I think that's just sweet. <3

-heartbreak- when Xander hurts himself to help Cassia in preparing to fond Ky. :(

Ky is a really smart character. He lost his parents and since young he had to depend on himself to survive in a society that despises people like him, Aberrations. It can't be easy. Yet, without anyone teaching him, he knows how to agoid having the Officials take interest in him. At the same time as I wish Xander could get his happy ending, I want Ky to be happy too. He suffered so much as a child and deserves to be happy... Sigh.

Gosh, I wish I could have a glimpse of Ky's eyes other than reading the description from the book.

I wish Cassia's Grandfather didn't die at the beginning of the book, it would be nicer if we could read on how close they were and how wise her Grandfather was.

However, though the storyline and the setting was interesting, the characters in the book lacked something. Their personality was never really definied. All we know about the Cassia is that she's strong enough not to eat the pills and that Ky and Xander are both freaking smart. Compared to other books, I think the characters don't stand out so much. No strong impression given to me.

Overall, I think Ally Condie did a awesome wicked job in writing the storyline of Matched!

Some of my favourite quotes from the book:
“Every minute you spend with someone gives them a part of your life and takes part of theirs.”
-Ally Condie, Matched

“I think of how perhaps the best way to fly would be with hands full of earth, so you always remember where you came from.” (reminds me of the chinese saying 饮水思源 which as a similar meaning)
-Ally Condie, Matched

“It is one thing to make a choice and it is another thing to never have the chance.”
-Ally Condie, Matched

“Remembering is part of thinking, but not all of it.”
-Ally Condie, Matched
