►Book Review: The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Book Review: The Iron KingThe Iron King is the first book of The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. It is written in the POV of Meghan Chase, our protagonist. The Iron Fey is one of the best faerie books I've read so far. Hmm.. I would rate this book 3.75out of 5 stars. Firstly, I would like to say... I love Ash and Meghan, but I love Puck and Meghan too. Summary: Meghan's little brother, Ethan is kidnapped and replaced by a changeling. She travels into Nevernever to save him, along with her best friend Robin Goodfellow (Puck) and encounters a mysterious ice prince (Ash) whose aim is to kill her. Meghan finds out that she is the half human daughter of Oberon, King if the Seelie Court and that her best friend is part of the fey too. Eventually, Meghan saves her brother from Nevernever and falls in love with Ash. She kills Machina, the Iron King of the Iron Realm. In the process, she claims his magic. Her whole life is changed, she's no longer the misfit who is oblivious to the magic around her. She knows why she's different. After sending Ethan back home, Ash comes to send Meghan to the Unseelie Court. I like the way the book makes references to A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. Parts on the Seelie Court (Oberon, Titania and Puck) were really fascinating. Julie Kagawa made those characters from Shakespeare come alive once more. Puck's mischievousness and protectiveness over Meghan is too cute. It absolutely brings out his unique character. To me, he's like a sad clown. On the outside, he maintains a cheery and funny character, but deep inside, he hides his troubles and worries from anyone including Meghan. When I realised he was in love with Meghan, my heart broke because he wasn't getting the love he deserved from her... Ash is a quiet and reserved character who appears as cold. He's shaped that way because of his upbringing in the Unseelie Court where everyone is careful and cut-off from warm fuzzy emotions. Look at the way the Unseelie Queen treats her three sons. Gosh, how can anyone survive growing up in an environment devoid of love and affection. :( Despite Ash's coldness, he has this certain brokenness about him. Cold but as fragile as a sheet of ice. That's what made me like him. I guess I like all broken fictional characters. Let's carry on with Meghan. Well, I can't say Meghan's my favourite person in the book. Her concern over her missing brother and the fact that she was brave enough to venture into the unknown for him won quite a number of points from me. That, I admire. How many of us have the courage to put ourselves at risk for someone we love? Despite that, I didn't really like Meghan. Perhaps it was her tendency to require saving when in danger? Or, because I think she should treat her longtime best friend better. She definitely should treasure Puck more. The Iron King has an interesting plot line that never fails to capture the attention of readers. Also, Ash and Puck never fails to capture the hearts of readers. :D Yes, you should read The Iron King and proceed to The Iron Daughter next!! Happy Reading~ Quotes: Touch her, and I'll freeze your testicles off and put them in a jar. Understand? -Julie Kagawa, The Iron King (OMG, Ash is being protective) There was a soft chuckle beside me, and my heart stopped. "So this is Oberon's famous half-blood," Ash mused as I whirled around. His eyes, cold and inhuman, glimmered with amusement. Up close, he was even more beautiful, with high cheekbones and dark tousled hair falling into his eyes. My traitor hands itched, longing to run my fingers through those bangs. Horrified, I clenched them in my lap, trying to concentrate on what Ash was saying. "And to think," the prince continued, smiling, "I lost you that day in the forest and didn't even know what I was chasing." I shrank back, eyeing Oberon and Queen Mab. They were deep in conversation and did not notice me. I didn't want to interrupt them simply because a prince of the Unseelie Court was talking to me. Besides, I was a faery princess now. Even if I didn't quite believe it, Ash certainly did. I took a deep breath, raised my chin, and looked him straight in the eye. "I warn you," I said, pleased that my voice didn't tremble, "that if you try anything, my father will remove your head and stick it to a plaque on his wall." He shrugged one lean shoulder. "There are worse things." At my horrified look, he offered a faint, self-derogatory smile. "Don't worry, princess, I won't break the rules of Elysium. I have no intention of facing Mab's wrath should I embarrass her. That's not why I'm here." "Then what do you want?" He bowed. "A dance." "What!" I stared at him in disbelief. "You tried to kill me!" "Technically, I was trying to kill Puck. You just happened to be there. But yes, if I'd had the shot, I would have taken it." "Then why the hell would you think I'd dance with you?" "That was then." He regarded me blandly. "This is now. And it's tradition in Elysium that a son and daughter of opposite territories dance with each other, to demonstrate the goodwill between the courts." "Well, it's a stupid tradition." I crossed my arms and glared. "And you can forget it. I am not going anywhere with you." He raised an eyebrow. "Would you insult my monarch, Queen Mab, by refusing? She would take it very personally, and blame Oberon for the offense. And Mab can hold a grudge for a very, very long time." Oh, damn. I was stuck. -Julie Kagawa, The Iron King -Sheryl Labels: Ash, Julie Kagawa, Meghan Chase, Puck, The Iron King |
