►Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
Thursday, December 13, 2012
Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars-champagne glasses up- here's to many more to come. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. (really, i give it 5 out of 5 stars) Basically, it broaches the subjects of love, hope, depression, friendship, humour and the end that all of us face: death. It's the story of two teenagers who were stricken with cancer, one facing the aftermath of it and the other in remission, accepting that death is inevitable. Yes, they are the main characters (obviously), Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters (Gus) respectively. ![]() We see the world through Hazel's eyes. (oh and yes, they do fall in love <3 ) SPOILER ALERT!!! Well, my favourite part of the book: “Gus: "It tastes like..." Me: "Food." Gus: "Yes, precisely. It tastes like food, excellently prepared. But it does not taste, how do I put this delicately...?" Me: "It does not taste like God Himself cooked heaven into a series of five dishes which were then served to you accompanied by several luminous balls of fermented, bubbly plasma while actual and literal flower petals floated down around your canal-side dinner table." Gus: "Nicely phrased." Gus's father: "Our children are weird." My dad: "Nicely phrased.” -Chapter 15; The Fault in Our Stars by John Green I love how the characters act around each other (Hazel and Gus are like the perfect pair), supporting each other when things go wrong. (lots of things go wrong in the book) Both main characters aren't perfect. Hazel has a tube stuck to her and Gus is missing a leg. I think the book just brings out the importance of: you don't have to be perfect to love another, neither do you have to love another who is perfect. Everyone is flawed. Then when everything was almost perfect, Gus had to die of a relapse. -tears out hair- God, Gus is like one of the sweetest and most awesome dude in all the books I've read. WHY WHY WHY. WHY MUST YOU DIE. yeah, fans worldwide are crying. Somehow, after Gus' death, it further heightens the fact that not all stories have a happy ending. So it seems that maybe his death was necessary to round up the whole plot, but of course not without wrenching the heart of readers. The book ends with a touching letter from Gus to Peter Van Houten (a douche bag, by the way), the author of Hazel's favourite book (An Imperial Affliction). I love John Green's ability to weave all the so many different emotions into a single book. Despite the occasional humour in the book, there is always this underlying sadness present. This book is a definitely MUST READ. (if you haven't read it, GO GO GO!!) -Sheryl Labels: Augustus, Hazel Grace, John Green, The Fault In Our Stars |
