►Book Review: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Tuesday, December 18, 2012
Book Review: TwilightI know Twilight by Stephenie Meyer was written quite some time ago (I read it 3 years ago), but I felt the sudden interest to do a review on it. Okay, a quick summary: There's a super clumsy human named Isabella Swan (Bella). She moves to the consistently raining town of Forks. She meets the Cullen family at school and is... attracted? After a few unfortunate happenings and Edward Cullen, our lead character, coming to save Bella each time, his secret is revealed to her. Of course, it wasn't revealed on purpose. Bella guessed it. That's right, Edward's a vampire, not the human blood sucking but the animal blood sucking kind. They fall in love and then comes James, the vampire tracker. James wanted to uhh... suck the life out of Bella? Bella is again saved by Edward. The end.My initial rating of this book was 4 stars out of 5, but it dropped a little bit over the years (3.5 out of 5 currently). I simply love Stephenie Meyer's awesome English and all the big words I've never used before. :) Well, I feel that the fact that the vampires in the novel are more superior than the humans in like everything is rather disturbing. You name it. Speed, strength, super powers even and immortality (though this may not be a good thing. forever is a very long time). How do I explain this? Let's compare a leopard to a human. Leopards are better in speed and strength, thoughh lacking somewhat compared to a human's intelligence. Humans on the other hand can't run very fast nor are we born with super strength. But the fact that we are smart more than makes up for the other two factors. We are at the top of the food chain. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that where there's a upside, there's a downside. Except that the downside of being a vampire in Twilight seems completely non-existant (minus out the drinking part and eternal thirst thing. humans have to eat and suffer gastric too, you know). The vampires in Twilight don't even have to fear the sun like they're fearing death. They don't worry about the diseases that kill of humans either. Somehow, the more I thought about it, it seemed unrealistic that the vampires lack their downside. Despite this, I think Stephenie Meyer did an excellent job in bringing into this world a new perspective of vampires. Truely, it is interesting to read the fact that they are not going to be turned to ashes by the sun but sparkle under the sun. Next discussion. Let's talk about the characters. Edward is... a little strange as a character (but maybe that's because he's a lonely vampire?). It's as if he suffers from the Buridan's ass syndrome. One moment he tells Bella that he's dangerous and they can't be together. The next, he tells her he can't stay away from her any longer though he knows he isn't good for her. Make up your mind already. The one good thing about Edward is that you can say he genuinely cares for Bella and he shows it. :) Bella makes me doubt what her true character is. To people she knows and love, she seems so selfless and puts on the I-can-die-for-you attitude. For instance, the episode with her mother and James. However, when it concerns the lives of others, she can be considered indifferent. What was her reaction when she heard Edward confess than he killed many people during his rebellious vampire stage? She brushed that fact aside. Goodness, all those lives. They may be criminals but killing them yourself doesn't justify your actions. It only makes you a murderer. Jacob.. Well, Twilight doesn't really describe him much. We see more of him in New Moon. Billy seems like the most believable character in Twilight to me. He acts like a normal father does. -thumbs up- Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Twilight hater or anything. I'm just pointing out some things that don't quite make sense to me in the novel. :) Should you read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer? Go ahead if you have time. The Twilight Saga isn't the best works that Stephenie Meyer has written. I think The Host beats it by a notch. Probably I'll write a review on it too. Bits and pieces from the book: Twilight again. Another ending. No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end. -Twilight by Stephenie Meyer When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it's not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end. -Twilight by Stephenie Meyer The right thing isn't always real obvious. Sometimes the right thing for one person is the wrong thing for someone else. So... good luck figuring that out. -Twilight by Stephenie Meyer Until next time~ -Sheryl Labels: Bella, Edward, Stephenie Meyer, Twilight |
