►Book Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Book Review: The Night CircusI like The Night Circus's plot. It fascinates me with all the wonderful things magic can build and at the same time how it is able to destroy. People like Celia Bowen in the book are born with magic (she's human. well, she's slightly more gifted than a regular human). Celia can do magic (it wouldn't be appropriate if i say magic tricks) without contraceptions. The magic is simply part of her. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. Here's how the story goes. Two magicians train their students in magic. The students are made to face off each other in place of their "instructor". Competition only ends when one competitor can no longer hold on (exhaustion falls in after controlling large amounts of magic 24/7) and dies. We are introduced to the two main characters: Celia Bowen, the daughter of the Prospero the Enchanter (Hector Bowen). She is made to compete for her father. Marco competes against her. Both use magic to set up tents of really cool stuff like the ice garden and the wishing tree in the Circus of Dreams. Really fitting name for the circus, I must say. Celia and Marco fall in love and realise that for the sick game they were bound to to end, one must die. Together, they try to find a way around this cruel ending. I'll leave the ending for you to read. :) My thoughts: I think Erin Morgenstern is a really awesome writer. She writes the book in a way that intrigues readers to continue reading. The starting and the ending sentence of the book are the same: The circus arrives without warning. Well, that's quite an interesting writing technique, different from what we usually see in novels. It links the book back to the start. :) Another thing. I have to get it out of my system. WHY ARE YOU BOTH SO SELFISH AND CRUEL?! I mean, it's your fight. Why get someone else to represent you in the competition? You guys want to see who's a better magician? Go face off with each other! == The way I see it, it's just some sick hobby that two old magicians have to keep themselves occupied. Sick. People, innocent people gifted with talents are destroyed because of this ridiculous competition. It's like indirectly murdering someone! Forcing them to their death! My goodness, where's their conscience? Hector Bowen even used his own daughter. How fatherly of him. Lastly, it seems like the love between Marco and Celia is love at first sight. The development on how their love uhh... grows is a little lacking in the book. I'm not a believer of love at first sight. Sure, you could be attracted to someone the moment you saw them, but that's just infatuation. Love is much stronger than that. I get it that Marco and Celia are in love since they are willing to sacrifice themselves for each other. But where's the development from attraction to love? Overall, I still love this book because of it's super cool plot and setting. You should definitely go read it. It's worth it. :D Quotes form the book: The finest pleasures are always the unexpected ones. -The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Life takes us to unexpected places sometimes. The future is never set in stone, remmeber that. -The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern People don't pay much attention to anything unless you give them reason to. -The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern -Sheryl Labels: Celia Bowen, Erin Morgenstern, Marco, The Night Circus |
