Book Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

I just finished reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Well, I think this book is cool, with all the photographs of the peculiar children and the story gravitating around them. The story might seem really far fetched with all the strange children with powers, but at the same time it is the exact same far fetch-ness that captivates readers. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

The story goes like this. Jacob Portman no longer believes in the stories his grandfather told him about the magical island protected by the Bird, where strange children live. One day at work, he receives a frantic phone call from Grandpa Portman. Jacob goes to check on him. Grandpa is attacked and left on the ground outside, dying. He gives queer instructions to Jacob as his last words. Jacob faints upon seeing a man with tenticles coming out of his mouth. (ew?) Our main character finally finds the island that his grandfather told him in stories. Everything changes for him when he discovers a loop. Jacob travels back in time to September 3rd 1940 where he finds Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children. Technically, everyday repeats itself as September 3rd in the loop, hence the name. Ah well, Jacob is peculiar too, he sees monsters that no one else sees. Not a very cool gift unlike the other peculiars with invisibility and super strength but... yeah. Someone is murdering sheep on the island. Headmistress Miss Peregrine realises that the Home is in danger. She is kidnapped and the children fight their way to get her back. Book ends with the children and Miss P setting off on a journey to stop the monsters from either destroying the world or evolving into dangerous beings.

The storyline is sooooo cool.

What I think:
Asides from the super cool storyline, I like how Jacob's character develops through the book. In the beginning, he's a little cowardy teenaged boy who looks up to his grandpa as a hero. By the end of the book, Jacob has become more courageous and selfless. The development is appropriate; it doesn't have an unreasonable or unfathomable change in the character like other books. Ransom Riggs made the characters in such a way that they are totally believable. Thumbs up!

I understand why Abe (Grandpa Portman) had to leave the loop to defend his people. He's totally patriotic or something. Noble, but it's sad that Emma got ditched by him after the war. Wow, talk about change of hearts. I'm so glad Emma and Jacob are close to going together. Emma has suffered alone for too long. She deserves somebody.

The only disappointment I had in the book was that the other peculiars wern't that involved in the story. They were only briefly introduced. Perhaps their roles in the story could be enhanced a little more.
And, I couldn't see the point of Victor's existance. Sure, he's supposed to be a super weight lifter before he died (since everyday repeats itself, his body doesn't really rot in the death bed he's on. that's just creepy). I don't see the need to emphasize to the reader that if a peculiar meets a monster outside the loop, they're dead. That point is quite clear.

Anyway, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a great book to read, that is, if you are not the type who gets nightmares easily. :)

Hope the sequel comes out soon!

My favourite quotes from the book:
When someone won't let you in, eventually you stop knocking.
-Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Sometimes it's better not to look back.
-Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

We cling to our fairy tales until the price for believing in them becomes too high.
