Book Review: Divergent

Currently, I'm just doing book reviews if books I've read before. The library hasn't really updated it's shelves on new releases yet.

I loved reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. Truth be said, I wasn't really interested in this book when I saw the cover. But it appeared top on the Young Adult lists for quite sometime and I thought: maybe I misjudged this book. So true.

I'm rating it 4 stars out of 5.

Veronice Roth brings out a whole new idea of people having factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite. There are Aptitude tests to tell them which factions they are more "inclined" to (works like a personality test, to me). It was interesting to read, a fresh new idea.

And of course, our lead character, Beatrice Prior (Tris) is different from most of the rest. She's Divergent meaning she can belong to more than one faction. Well, they deem it dangerous to be Divergent. Welcome our other lead character, Tobias (Four). He helps her avoid detection as Divergent in stimulation tests.

The stimulation tests in the book reminds me of Amanda injecting Alex with the hallucinogen in Nikita (the tv series).

Yes, this is Alex when Amanda injected her with the serum.

Okay, back to topic.
A mind controlling serum is made to control everyone. Everyone gets affected unless, of course, you're Divergent which makes you immune to it.
Tris shuts down the system with help from Tobias, and not without the sacrifice of her parents.

Though not my favourite female lead character, I liked Tris' personality. She's smart, daring and loyal, yet vulnerable on the inside at the same time. I think her bravery was truly shown when she stood up for Al and offered to have knives risk being shot at her head instead of her friend. How many people would put their life on the line for their friends?

Tobias is confident and cautious. Well, he's Divergent too and he avoided detection for 2 years.

One thing I couldn't understand in the book: if the Dauntless were really so Dauntless, why didn't the characters that got bullied stand up for themselves? It seems to me that remaining silent about the incident was what the characters thought was brave.

Some quotes from the book:
Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.
-Divergent by Veronica Roth

“Can you be a girl for a few seconds?"
"I'm always a girl" I frown.
"You know what I mean. Like a silly, annoying girl"
I twirl my hair around my finger. "Kay.”
-Divergent by Veronica Roth

Do I recommend this book? Yupp! Tris and Tobias <3
