Book Review: BloodlinesFirstly, Bloodlines is the first book of the spin-off series of the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. So, can it be read without reading the Vampire Academy series? Sure, why not? I personally like this book a lot (rating a 4 out of 5 stars), probably even better than the VA series. This review is done as a request. From the book jacket: Sydney’s blood is special. That’s because she’s an alchemist –one of the group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets – and human lives. But the last encounter Sydney had with vampires got her in deep trouble with the other alchemists. And now with the allegiances in question, her future is on line. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she’s still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir – the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir – is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill’s guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the unlikeliest of places: a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one. The Moroi court believe Jill and Sydney will be safe at Amberwood Prep, but threats, distractions, and forbidden romance lurk outside – and within – the school grounding. Now that they are in hiding, the drama is only just beginning. It was really interesting reading Bloodlines because the more background-ish characters in VA are introduced to us as main characters here. The lead character, Sydney Sage... Well, she's incredibly smart (I mean who knows how to speak like 5 different languages and still rocks in science?). Sydney was born and raised to behave like a typical alchemist, she's studious, silent and observant. Because she was home schooled, she's a little slower in relationships. I think that socially-awkwardness she has only endears her to the readers. You have to admit, when you see someone not understand that a guy is asking you out (though it's obvious), you have to smile. Sydney plays a slightly parental role in the novel, having to take care of Jill and Adrian. She's just so responsible that sometimes I think: Chillax girl, take things easier! Adrian.. Well, besides cheering for Rose and Dimitri to be together in VA, I secretly wished than Adrian would find the happiness he deserves too. In Bloodlines, we see that Adrian is slowly recovering after his failed relationship with Rose. Adrian appears to be Mr I-don't-give-a-damn-about-the-world, but the amazing thing about him is: if he finds cause to work for something, he'll give it all he has. Awwwwwww, he's a really sweet and supportive guy. :) I seriously hope Sydney and Adrian end up together. He deserves a happy ending too!! Some quotes: "You should've just gotten a kids' meal." Adrian told me, pointing to my half-eaten burger and fries. "You could've saved me a lot of money. And gotten a toy." -Bloodlines by Richelle Mead "Thanks for looking out for her, Sage. You're okay. For a human." I almost laughed. "Thanks." "You can say it too, you know." I walked over to Latte and paused. "Say what?" "That I'm okay... for a vampire," he explained. I shook my head, still smiling. "You'll have a hard time getting any Alchemist to admit that. But I can say you're okay for an irreverent party boy with occasional moments of brilliance." "Brilliant? You think I'm brilliant?" He threw his hands skyward. "You hear that, world? Sage says I'm brilliant." -Bloodlines by Richelle Mead The Bloodlines series is definitely recommended. #1 Bloodlines #2 The Golden Lily #3 The Indigo Spell (coming in 2013) -Sheryl Labels: Adrian, Bloodlines, Richelle Mead, Sydney |
